Emerging Broncos prop Ben Te Kura posted another strong performance for Souths Logan Magpies as Brisbane-listed players were out in force during last weekend’s Hostplus cup action.
Te Kura racked up his sixth try for the season as well as charging for a huge 179 running metres including nine tackle busts as the Magpies beat the PNG Hunters 40-10 in Port Moresby.
Te Kura’s four-pointer came from a trademark combination with hooker Blake Mozer, where the Broncos-listed no.9 used some slight of hand to feed the big prop from close range to barge his way across the line.
The developing Mozer played 71 minutes – his longest stint since making his Hostplus Cup debut against the Hunters last season – making 35 tackles as well as notching a try assist, a line break assist and a line break himself from a Te Kura offload.
Prop Logan Bayliss scored a try of his own under the posts, ran for 119 metres and made 19 tackles as he partnered Te Kura in a strong starting front row partnership.
Also on Saturday, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls boasted Broncos Corey Jensen and Keenan Palasia as their starting props with both big men impressing in a 42-32 win at Toowoomba.
Jensen ran for a game-high 191 metres and made 29 tackles with no misses, while Palasia ran for 77 metres with 16 tackles and no misses. Hooker Tyson Smoothy was also faultless in defence with 43 tackles at 100 per cent efficiency as well as contributing a line break, a line break assist and a try assist.
In the backs, Deine Mariner stepped his way to another Cup try and 114 run metres, centre partner Delouise Hoeter made 157 metres with six tackle breaks and a line break, and point-scoring machine Josh Rogers added a try and seven goals to his season tally which now sits at 166 from 13 games.
